Organic, Clean, Green – What’s the difference?
It would be a lot easier to understand skincare if every company had a standard for what the terms organic, clean and green mean, but that’s not the case.
For example, the terms “clean” and “green” are not regulated. So what that means is that a company can basically market any item as clean or green, and there’s no one to double-check if the product actually meets that standard… the standard doesn’t exist. It’s for Organic products have standards, but they are not necessarily better than other skin care products.
Organic
The USDA regulates certified organic products. The term “organic” refers to anything grown or farmed. So some materials are never organic. The minerals contained in eye shadow cannot be grown or farmed, so they are not organic. Organic ingredients are grown, bred or harvested according to standards set by the USDA. This usually means that they are not made with pesticides, fertilizers or chemicals that could affect the final product.
Green
Green beauty is a term we often hear when companies create products that contain natural, plant-based ingredients instead of chemical or synthetic ingredients. Not a thing. Green products may contain plant-based ingredients, but they also contain plastics and chemicals.
To clean
Clean beauty generally means products made with natural, plant-based ingredients and free of potentially irritating harmful chemicals or ingredients. While we don’t automatically mean organic, clean products are generally safer and better for your skin than traditional beauty products.
Is organic better than green or clean?
Organic is the only regulatory term, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better than green or clean products that aren’t organic. There is a cost to a company to obtain organic certification. Some companies may choose to waive organic certification even if the ingredients used are clean, natural and sustainably sourced. Many companies rely on the effectiveness of their products to get their jobs done. The transparency of the ingredients also makes a difference. When companies are reluctant to disclose specific ingredients and why they are used, there is reason to question whether their products are safe.
Clean means to Rael
At Rael, we have pretty high standards for what we call clean beauty. Our Organic skin care Products are powered by K-Beauty Technology, which is traditionally based on natural, holistic practices for healthy skin. Classically, the Korean beauty regimen is a 10-step regimen that includes a double wash, the application of toner and serum, and layers of hydration to give the skin adequate nourishment. Italian women apply foundation and concealer. I prefer a natural look over layering and color correcting. Rael’s skincare regimen is a streamlined, 8-step program that uses natural, plant-based products to keep skin as healthy and glowing as she was during the second week of her menstrual cycle.
